Your LAST Home - A Little Halloween Madness

Your LAST Home - A Little Halloween Madness

Your Last Home

Graves of the Infamous

I know this is a little morbid, however it IS Halloween so bear with me here.  Have you ever given any thought to YOUR last home?  Your final resting place, that small slab of real estate that we don't really want to think about while we are still breathing.  What exactly does that mean - final resting place?  Is it really final?

A few years ago I visited the Hearst Castle in San Simeon California, a truly beautiful place.  During the tour the guide pointed out very beautiful and ornate ancient caskets that adorned the gardens, mostly imported from Europe.  I'm certain that means that a "final resting place" was disturbed. I'd haunt them for that, I'd drag chains through the hallways late at night and scare the crapiola out of them, all the while laughing maniacally!

Think about it.  You are buried, money changes hands for eternal care, what does that mean?  If I give you money today how long does it last?  When several generations go by and memories of geneology has passed, your decendants have relocated and there isn't anybody left who remembers you, who pays for eternal care?  Who cares anymore?  Who even knows you are there? Where are the graves of 100's and 1000's of years ago?  With the exception of few, they are lost forever.

Marilyn MonroeThere is a limited amount of precious real estate allotted to cemeteries.  We have a massive population and many generations have passed - what are they doing for space?  Are they recycling the space when nobody is looking?  Is the term "final resting place" just another scam?  If they are recycling the space (and in my opinion they would have to over the long haul) what the heck are they doing with the remains?  Hey I warned you that this was a little morbid!

So, who's grave would be safe?  Celebrities?  Probably, if they were major and remained a box office draw like Marilyn Monroe, heck they run bus tours to her grave in Westwood California, she remains an icon and will for a very long time, perhaps even into eternity?

Who would dare and disturb the graves of the Mafia Dons?  I grew up in an Italian neighborhood in Middle Village, New York.  The movie Goodfellas (shout out to Nicholas Pileggi for that movie) was written, based on a story, about a neighbor who lived down the block from my family, we went to school with his children.  I can tell you for certain that if any of those graves were disturbed, even hundreds of years from now that all hell would break loose. The Italians have that family thing down pat.

Middle Village is located in Queens New York and is home to St. Johns Cemetery.  Many of the mafia bosses are buried in this very established cemetery.  My grandmother left us earlier this year which involved a trip back home.  Many of my family members are buried in St. Johns, so I made the trek over there with my camera and took some pictures of the Mafia Dons graves and a few others too.

HALLOWEEN History and Resources

HALLOWEEN History and Resources

Halloween

 Halloween

All Hallows Eve - The evening before All Saints Day

The history of Halloween places it's origins in the ancient Celt culture (Irish) as a festival known as Samhain.  Samhain celebrates the end of harvest season and was a time to take stock of supplies and slaughter livestock (I am thankful for supermarkets) for the long hard winter season ahead.  Ancient Celts believed that on All Hallows Eve the walls between the living and the dead overlapped.  They believed that the dead would come back and wreak havoc on the crops and cause illness. Celts performed colorful rituals involving costumes and bonfires (I like parties) in an attempt to placate the evil spirits. Kinda creepy, huh?

The Irish potato Famine (1845-1849) resulted in the migration of some two million Irish to the United States who brought the holiday with them.

HalloweenIn the United States, Halloween has become the sixth most profitable holiday after Christmas, Mothers Day, Valentines Day, Easter and Fathers Day) and has become our second most popular holiday, which is marketed to children and adults alike.  According to the National Retail Federation, the most popular Halloween costumes for adults are, in order: witch, pirate, vampire, cat and clown.

BIG research conducted a survey for the National Retail Federation in the United States and found that 53.3% of consumers planned to buy a costume for Halloween 2005, spending $38.11 on average (up 10 dollars from the year before). They were also expected to spend $4.96 billion in 2006, up significantly from just $3.29 billion the previous year.

The carved pumpkin, lit by a candle inside, is one of Halloween's most prominent symbols. This is an Irish tradition of carving a lantern which goes back centuries.

The jack-o'-lantern can be traced back to the Irish legend of  Stingy Jack, a greedy, gambling, hard drinking old farmer who tricked the devil into climbing a tree, and trapped him by carving a cross into the trunk of the tree. In revenge, the devil placed a curse on Jack which dooms him to forever wander the earth at night. For centuries, the bedtime parable was told by Irish parents to their children.
