How the Hill got its name

In the 1500s. the local natives, the Tongva Indians, used the advantage of the hill which is 365 feet taller than the surrounding area of Long Beach for signal fires to Santa Catalina Island where the other tribes were 26 miles offshore. It was the signaling point that the Spanish settlers called ˜Loma Sental, which means ˜Signal Hill.
